Bulletproof glass is a term used often but in reality, there is no such thing as a glass that is 100% safe from bullets so, bullet resistant is a better term.

Safety And Security Window Types For Your Colorado Springs Church, School Or Business

As his country faces a rash of mass-shootings in churches, schools and other public areas the term “bulletproof” glass used a lot these days. But the term bulletproof is actually misleading because no glass is 100% impenetrable to bullets. With enough time, effort and a large enough caliber bullet, a motivated enough attacker can get through any “bulletproof” structure (be it glass or plastic). However, there are glass and glass-like windows that are incredibly strong and as bullet-resistant, as one can get and will very much keep your home, school, government building, church or business safe from an attack with bullets or bombs. Below we have outlined a few of these systems, including our own specialty, which is glass layered with high-end window films and adhesives.

There Are Three Main Kinds Of Bullet-Resistant Glass (Sometimes Called Bulletproof)

1) Acrylic Bullet Resistant Glass: Acrylic is a very dense, hard, clear plastic and it actually looks exactly like glass. To be considered bullet resistant it must be over an inch thick. This type of system repels bullets, aka, bullets bounce off after impact. It will stop many calibers of bullets and weighs about half of what glass the same size does.

2) Polycarbonate Bullet Resistant Glass: Polycarbonate is also plastic but is a bit different than acrylic. This is because it is lighter than acrylic (making it easier to work with). However, the biggest difference is polycarbonate catches/ absorbs the bullets instead of repelling them.

3) Glass Treated With Film: This type of bullet resistant glass is glass layered with high-performance films on top, giving it incredible strength and flexibility. Specialty adhesives are used in this method and also attachment frames to keep the glass and film in place after impact. The benefit of this type of bullet repelling method is–almost any existing window can be made bullet resistant, often times making it more cost-effective than the previous two methods.
