Bird Strike Prevention Window Film Solutions for Kansas City Homes

Here in Kansas City, as with many cities across the United States, we are seeing a distinct uptick in bird strikes on windows.  Not just windows of high-rise buildings either but KC homes. This is likely because as population density increases, so too does the likelihood of collisions of birds with glass.  As mentioned, this is not only a Kansas City problem but a global issue. Worldwide over 2 billion birds are killed each year because they fly into windows, just like those on your home.

Why Do Birds Fly Into Windows?

The issue with birds and windows is–birds are unable to distinguish glass from open air.  Furthermore, in an era where glass is becoming increasingly reflective, the windows look more and more like the sky to our avian friends.  This is also a reason why tactics like putting a sticker of a large bird of prey on the windows of your Kansas City home won’t work. When a smaller bird sees the bird or prey they instinctively will try to use their best defense, their maneuverability, to fly around it.  When this happens the bird flies into the anyway resulting, most times, in their death.

How Can We Prevent Bird Strikes On Windows

Scientists have been studying various methods to keep birds and windows from deadly run-ins. While there are several ideas out there, one of the best is actually window film.  These bird strike prevention films are referred to as “fretted”. What fretted means is a repeating pattern that a bird will see when flying towards what would otherwise be clear glass.  The pattern itself consists of horizontal lines, vertical lines, or dots but can be customized as well. However, the key to these films working is that the lines, dots or other objects are spaced no more than two inches apart and vertical lines no more than four inches.  If the pattern is outside of this density birds will attempt to fly through the gaps in the pattern. The great part about fretted films to prevent bird strikes on your homes windows is–they are barely noticeable. But the best part is fretted films also come with many of the benefits of window film too.
